Karachi, August 30, 2024 – Residents of Sindh are on high alert as Cyclone Asna, a rapidly intensifying storm system, is expected to bring heavy rains and strong winds to the region. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued warnings to coastal areas, advising people to take necessary precautions as the cyclone approaches.

Cyclone Asna Intensifies

Cyclone Asna, which formed in the Arabian Sea earlier this week, has intensified into a severe cyclonic storm. The PMD has reported that the storm system is moving in a northwesterly direction, and it is expected to make landfall along the Sindh-Makran coast within the next 48 hours. The cyclone is accompanied by winds reaching speeds of up to 120 kilometers per hour, with the potential to cause significant damage to infrastructure and property.

Residents Prepare for Heavy Rains and Flooding

As the cyclone approaches, residents of Sindh are bracing for heavy rainfall and possible flooding. The PMD has forecasted that the storm could bring 150 to 200 millimeters of rain to coastal areas, with the potential for even higher amounts in isolated locations. Low-lying areas are particularly at risk, and local authorities have begun evacuating residents from vulnerable regions.

In Karachi, the provincial capital, emergency response teams have been mobilized, and residents are being urged to stay indoors during the storm. “We are closely monitoring the situation and have set up relief camps in several areas to accommodate those affected by the cyclone,” said a spokesperson for the Sindh Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA).

Fishermen Warned to Stay Ashore

The PMD has also issued warnings to fishermen, advising them to avoid venturing into the Arabian Sea until the storm passes. “The sea conditions are extremely rough, and it is unsafe for any small vessels to be out in these waters,” the warning stated. Fishermen along the coast have been instructed to secure their boats and remain on land until further notice.

Government Takes Preventive Measures

In anticipation of Cyclone Asna’s impact, the Sindh government has activated its disaster management plan. Emergency services, including police, fire departments, and medical teams, have been placed on high alert. Authorities are also coordinating with the armed forces to ensure a swift response in the event of widespread damage.

Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has urged residents to follow official advisories and avoid unnecessary travel. “The safety of our citizens is our top priority. We are doing everything in our power to minimize the impact of this cyclone and ensure that those in need receive timely assistance,” he said in a public statement.

Electricity and Communication Concerns

There are growing concerns about potential disruptions to electricity and communication networks as the cyclone nears. Utility companies have begun preparations to deal with power outages, while telecommunications providers are working to maintain service continuity during the storm. Residents are being advised to keep emergency supplies on hand, including flashlights, batteries, and essential medications.

With a deep depression situated approximately 170 kilometres from Karachi on Friday, Pakistan’s coastal areas are bracing for rains as the storm system has intensified into Cyclone Asna over the northeast Arabian Sea along Sindh’s coast.
